Having long since introduced names of the backs of uniforms, an exploding scoreboard and countless other baseball innovations, Bill Veeck was up to his old tricks as he re-assumed control of the Chicago White Sox in 1976. Offered here is a 1976 White Sox road jersey introduced and worn by the eccentric executive.
This navy blue knit pullover garment was worn untucked over pajama-style pants. With a 4"-wide collar, the jersey features "CHICAGO" arched across the chest in white tackle twill, "76" sewn to the back and "VEECK" arched atop the number in like fashion. On the tapered front tail, a "Rawlings" manufacturer's label denotes size "42." In addition to the avant-garde uniforms that year, Veeck also coaxed 50-year-old Minnie Minoso to come out of retirement and make eight plate appearances. Light wear from general handling, wash wear, and appearances.
Outstanding conversation piece, possibly the only Veeck "game worn" jersey to hit the auction block.
