Hank Bauer was a solid player for the dynastic New York Yankee teams for the 1950s. His powerful bat spoke volumes in the post season world series campaigns of 1951 and 1958. Dealt to Kansas City as part of the trade that brought Roger Maris to the Big Apple, Bauer would begin his managerial career with the A’s in 1961. Two years later he found himself in Baltimore and that’s where the story of the wonderful ensemble begins.
In 1964, his first year at the helm of the Orioles, Bauer took a struggling Baltimore franchise to a 3rd place finish and was named the American League Manager of the Year. Two years later, in 1966, he would repeat with this honor only taking the Birds all the way with a stunning sweep of the LA Dodgers in the world series. Teams like the 1966 Orioles always retain a special place in the hearts of their fans and this brings us to our offering. While the jersey has no year identification, the style of MacGregor-Sandknit tag is one typically found during the period of 1985-1986. A review of period newspapers by way of the an article from the 8 August 1986 edition of the Frederick News-Post details that on Sunday August 10th , and old timers game would played between members of the 1966 Washington Senators and the 1966 World Champion Baltimore Orioles. Included on the Orioles roster for this game was Hank Bauer who managed the team in 1966. (Copy of this article included with this uniform)
This lot includes the jersey, pants, stirrups, and cap. The cap that comes with this uniform is one with an adjustable fastener in the back, not uncommon for either spring training or for events such as reunion or old timer’s games. Both the jersey and the cap feature clear and clear Bauer autographs. Use and wear are considered light with mild soiling on the right shoulder/armarea and fleck spots in the tail and minor places elsewhere on the jersey. Pants are free of soiling that is found on the jersey. The uniform grades out highly at A9 (Minus 1 point (CAT V) for soiling in the right shoulder and light fleck like staining on the jersey is various places). No points were deducted for light use since the uniform very likely was only worn for a single event and light use would have been expected.
