The Hairston family is one of baseball's best. Much like the Boone family, the Hairstons have produced big league caliber ballplayers for three generations.
Twenty years from now, there will be a Hairston on a Major League diamond if past success is any indication of the future.
Proud papa Jerry Hairston (who has two sons in the bigs currently) wore this size "40" lightweight knit jersey during the 1983 season. The pullover includes a 1983 All-Star Game patch on the left sleeve. Decent use is shown with identifier softness and edge fraying from launderings. "HAIRSTON" is spaced across the verso atop the numbers. Sewn in the back inner tail is the following swatch "82 Hairston 40" with a "1" (set number) flag tag. Sewn in tandem in the tail are White Sox exclusivity and Medalist Sand Knit size tags.
Per the strip tag, the jersey was originally issued during the 1982 season. It had carryover use, when the 1983 All Star Game patch was applied for that season's use.
Size 40: Tagged size is 40, and the chest measurement is 20”, which verifies the size to the tag.
Manufacturer Medalist Sand Knit: Review of the MEARS database confirms two examples of Sand Knit as the supplier for the 1982-83 era. Examples compared:
1982 Carlton Fisk Home, 1983 Dave Duncan Home
Construction: Jersey was manufactured in typical Sand Knit style with set in sleeves, and a V neck, verified by the above referenced examples. Name on both examples also appeared sewn directly on the jersey reverse.
An original 1983 All Star patch is sewn onto the right sleeve.
Final Grade: MEARS A10. Upon review of the MEARS grading criteria, there was no reason for point deductions.
Also for the sake of comparison, this example was compared to the 1983 Brinkman Home jersey, which is part of the MEARS museum collection. We were able to conduct a side by side comparison which allowed us to examine body shell material, tagging, name application, and manufacturing/tagging. The jersey compared quite favorably.
