Affectionately known simply as “Vuke”, Pete Vuckovich epitomized the blue collar work ethic of the city of Milwaukee. Hard working and never one to complain, Vuke was one of the most feared pitches in the American League during the 1980s. Besides his pitching ability, intimidation was another weapon in Vuke’s arsenal.
Offered for this lot is the one item of game worn equipment that captures the essence of Pete Vuckovich the player.
Produced by Rawlings, this game worn glove fits the left hand (as to be expected for a right hand thrower). On the forefinger is the factory stamping, “Fastback Model, U.S. Pat. No. 3.576.036, Holdster, US Pat. No. 3.602.915”. The red Rawlings wrist strap is found on the back. Inside the pocket is factory stamped, “Deep Well Pocket, Heart of the Hide, Pro B-P”. The glove shows good game wear.
Now, for the interesting part.
This is not just any game worn glove, this is Pete Vuckovich’s, and with it, his own twisted sense of humor.
On the outer left thumb area, applied personally by Vuke, in black marker is, “F**K You, and a drawing of an extended middle finger with 50 written inside. While standing on the mound, Vuke would bring the glove to his face, and turn the written message so that the opposing batter could see Vuke’s well wishes.
Further customizations come in the form of a large black markered, “VUKE’ written across each finger and “concentrate” applied on the bottom wrist adjustment strap. Pete, a notoriously difficult autograph, has signed the glove in silver (slight smudge)
For collectors that appreciate personal items, this is the glove for you.
