George Cumby was as tough as they come.
Consider Barry Switzer said that Cumby was the only man who could go mano-a-mano with Earl Campbell and knock the Tyler Rose backwards. That is enough for us. It was also enough for the Packers to peg Cumby as the 26th pick of the 1980 draft.
Cumby wore this helmet when he played in Green Bay. We are unable to confirm is this is the helmet William Perry ran into en route to national prominence.
Heavy use is shown with deep gouges on both sides, some of which have been filled in. Out of all the helmets in the Scott Waters Collection, this may show the most use.
The following appear on back: "52" dymo label, transparent warning sticker and Cumby's signature. The inside includes: cloth covering over forehead pad, Riddell gel-filled padding, leather jaw pads and 1983 recertification sticker.
A cupped chinstrap is snapped up on front.
Employed by the Green Bay Packers from 1984-2000, Scott Waters had on field access for each game, and mingled along the sidelines with the players. Several candid photos document his presence on the field. This lot originated directly from the Scott Waters collection.
