For the purpose of evaluation, MEARS inspected this 1980-81 Ray Knight Cincinnati Reds Louisville Slugger game used bat. During 1980, within the label period of this game used bat, Ray Knight had an All Star season and was elected to the Mid Summer Classic.
Examination of the centerbrand revealed the bat was consistent with the Louisville Slugger centerbrand manufacturing process used during the 1980-83 era. The label is evidenced by the large 125 (7/8 x ½) and Louisville Slugger (Large version) factory centerbrand stamp. Located on the barrel is the player requested S216 model number, which was factory stamped in block lettering/numbering. "Ray Knight" facsimile signature was factory stamped on the barrel, as was the practice of all players under contract with Louisville Slugger. On the knob, in period, faded and worn numbering is 25. Ray Knight wore this number while playing with the Reds during 1980-81.
The bat measures 34 ¼" and currently weighs 31.75 ounces. This S216 model was manufactured by Louisville Slugger with a medium sized knob, round barrel, and fashioned from professional grade northern white ash. The bat exhibits significant game use. Above the barrel are two deep sets of stitch marks exhibiting lace marks. Also scattered in the same area above the barrel are dozens of lesser stitch marks that haven't left seam impressions, but manifest themselves as an overall crushing of the grain, which has caused the loosening of several layers of grain, but not full separation. Signs of overall heavy major league use. Underneath the barrel stampings are two more distinct sets of seam marks, with additional ball marks and use consistent with the type of use found above the barrel. The are two light white back rack marks, and many other signs of rack marks, which haven't left color paint transfers. Handle remains uncracked with no signs of pinetar. Per Knight's request, the bat shipped with a Hickory finish, thus the reason for the dark brown color. The factory stampings of the centerbrand, powerized, and player signature are all deep and free of blemishes.
