For the purpose of evaluation, MEARS inspected this 1979 Harry Spilman Model H176 game used bat. During the 1979 season, Harry Spilman played in the NCLS with the Reds.
Examination of the centerbrand revealed the bat was consistent with the Louisville Slugger centerbrand manufacturing process used during the 1977-79 era. Located on the barrel is the player requested H176 model number, which was factory stamped in block lettering/numbering at the H&B factory. "Harry Spilman" facsimile signature was factory stamped on the barrel, as was the practice of all players under contract with Louisville Slugger. On the knob, in period, faded, worn black marker numbering is the uniform number 12. Harry Spilman wore this number while playing with the Reds during the 1979 season.
The bat measures 35" and currently weighs 32 ounces. This H176 model was manufactured by Louisville slugger with a flare knob, round barrel and fashioned from professional grade northern white ash. Per Spilman's request, the bat was shipped with a Hickory finish, thus the reason for the dark brown color. The bat exhibits significant use. Above the barrel end are over one dozen deep ball marks that have left fully distinct lace impressions. Mixed in are a dozen or so ball marks. Below the barrel are approximately one dozen additional ball marks also exhibiting deep stitch marks that have left defined lace marks. There is light grain separation on the reverse of the barrel, a sign of heavy game use, but has not resulted in full separation of the wood. There are also deep ball marks that left stitch marks on the reverse of the barrel. The handle has a light coating of pinetar and remains uncracked. The factory stampings of the centerbrand, powerized, and player signature are all deep and free of blemishes.
