The Greatest. When ever uttered, everyone knows who this adjective refers to. After winning Olympic Gold, Muhammad Ali went on to win the Heavyweight Title, lose it, regain it, lose it, and then regains it for a then record 3rd straight time.
The During 1977, Ali was the reigning champion. One of his titles defenses was again Ernie “the Acorn” Shavers. Ali had marketing relationships with many manufacturers and suppliers of athletic gear. Adidas supplied shoes, Everlast Robes, Tuf Wear gloves, and for this fight, a British sporting goods company, Mitre, supplied the boxing trunks. The accompanying image shows Ali during the Shavers fight wear the Mitre brand trunks.
The This particular pair was worn at his Deer Lake, PA training camp for his upcoming fight against Shavers at Madison Square Garden. In the accompanying letter by noted boxing expert Craig Hamilton of Jo Sports, he writes, “…the trunks are white satin with black trim at the waistband and on the piping running down each leg. There is a manufacturer’s label on the front center waistband for MITRE. There is a small MITRE label on the lower left leg. The trunks are soiled from use, otherwise perfectly y intact. On the inside rear waistband is black marker, Ali, and on the front inside waistband the number 77. Both wear applied by Ali trainer, Wali Muhammad. The 77 written inside the trunks is likely the year 1977. Ali fought Ernie Shavers in that year and wore trunks made by Mitre in the event. Ali likely used these trunks supplied by Mitre to train for the fight. The trunks were purchased in April, 2012 as part of the collection of Ali’s long time assistant trainer, Wali Muhammad… signed, Craig Hamilton, 5-8-12”.
