The 1964 World Series involved two juggernauts of baseball: the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals. The Yankees, coming off a devastating loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in four straight games in the 1963 World Series, wanted to prove their worth and retain the luster of the legendary Yankee history. The Cardinals were on the opposite end of that spectrum. After two decades of relative obscurity, the Cards were looking to make their own history. Thanks to this outstanding collection of photos, history is preserved and for the taking.
This lot of images shows highlights of the 1964 World Series such as Tim McCarver's three run shot in the top of the tenth inning in game five, a close up of Bob Gibson in the locker room after game seven (Gibson would be awarded the series MVP), and a Yogi Berra rant in the fifth game among many more. This World Series would be the start of a decline in the legend of the Yankees, but the start of rise to contention for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Designated as a Type 1 photo, this image was developed directly from the original photographers negative within approximately two years of the depicted person/event. Photographers included in the collection include Charles Conlon, George Burke, George Brace, William C. Greene, Alex P. Silverberg, and George Dorrill. Some are identified; many are not but were provided by these world class photographers. Unlike standard wire photos, these images were often hand developed by the photographer and sent to the Sporting News magazine. Therefore, the result is an actual first generation Type 1 photographers print -again, not be confused with the more commonly found wire photo image. News service photos are also included, and in those instances, are identified as such by their respective stampings. Acme Wire Photo, Associated Press, International News, and United Press have provided images to the archives. Reverse images are included for identification purposes. As part of the production process for the newspaper, images may show production notes, photographer's stamps, date codes, and other markings associated with the production of the Sporting News newspaper. In all cases, each selected image is of superior quality, subject matter, clarity, contrast and condition.
