Anything related to the Lombardi era Packers carries quite a premium in the collecting industry. Well this jacket is the same one which the players wore on-field during the early stages of NFL's version of Camelot.
This size "50" jacket was issued to Dr. James Nellen as evidenced by his name written on a blank swatch. The jacket features "38" in single-color yellow tackle twill in the tail. Nobody wore "38" during Lombardi's tenure as coach so the jacket was donned by a non-player. The Sand Knit tag dates from 1962-63.
Secured in the collar is a Sand Knit size tag and "Dr. Nellin" (sic) written in vintage marker to a swatch.
Yellow/green/white/green/yellow ribbed material surrounds the neckline, sleeve ends and tail. Decent wash wear exhibited. A 1/4 zipper is still fully functional on front. A substance is evident on the lower region.
"PACKERS" is expressed on the reverse in tackle twill as well.
Dr. Nellen is credited as the man who basically saved Nelson Toburen from paralysis. The book The Lombardi Impact: Twenty People Who Were Brushed By Greatness (2011 Dave Robinson/Royce Boyles) tells the story of how Toburen broke his neck in a 1962 game against Detroit. Nellen was credited with saving Toburen from certain paralysis by keeping his neck from moving when others encouraged him to move around according to Jerry Kramer.
Great game worn jacket honoring a true Packers hero.
Employed by the Green Bay Packers from 1984-2000, Scott Waters had on field access for each game, and mingled along the sidelines with the players. Several candid photos document his presence on the field. This lot originated directly from the Scott Waters collection.
