For the purpose of evaluation, MEARS inspected this 1950-59 professional model game used bat bearing the facsimile signature of Bill Serena. This bat dates to the 1950-59 timeframe, based on the design of the centerbrand (1950-60) and the playing career of Serena (1950-54 Cubs) and (1955 Oakland, San Francisco PCL & 1956-57 Buffalo of the International League).
Bat measures 33" and currently weighs 32.5 ounces. The model R43 appears on the knob. With the centerbrand dating 1950-60 this bat was issued to Bill Serena to use with either the Cubs from 1950-54 or duringg 1955 with Oakland or San Francisco in the PCL, or his final seasons of 1956-57 with Buffalo of the International League.
The bat measures 33" and currently weighs 32.5 ounces. The model R43 is factory stamped on the knob. Bat has regular knob, tapered handle, round barrel, and is manufactured from professional grade second growth northern white ash. Bat exhibits heavy game use, with marring to the Powerized logo. The handle contains a 14" crack that has caused slight separation of the grain. The crack has entered the centerbrand oval and affects the letters of LOUISVILLE, KY. There are no missing pieces. On the lower handle are three vintage batboy nails, which appear vintage to the bat. Directly above, are 3 newly applied nails, not consistent with the practice of player applied nails. Two of the three nails have been covered with wood filler. The back barrel has two layers of grain separation, with the outmost layer lifting and creating a space between the two layers. There is a spotting which is found on the front surface and barrel end of the bat. The spotting affects the letter "a" in Serena. The Powerized logo appears to have been marred with an unknown instrument, and the exact reason is unknown.
LOA MEARS/Troy R. Kinunen. Bat was awarded 5 points of matching factory records, 3 points of heavy use, minus 3 points for crack, spotting, and marred Powerized label. Final Grade: MEARS A5
