Walter Johnson looked unassuming but his fastball was legendary. Offered are five original photos of the Big Train - measuring 6 3/4" x 8 1/2" to 8" x 10". At least one of the following appears on back: date stamp, caption affixed, production notes or photographer service stamp. The photo announcing his death has paper loss. Each has a Boston Herald Archives hologram.

The original Boston Herald was founded in 1846 by a group of Boston printers jointly under the name of John A. French & Company. The paper was published as a single two-sided sheet, selling for one cent. This is an original photo, in many cases a Type 1 printed at the time of the event. File copies or type 2 photos are also found, and can be distinguished by the markings on the reverse.
