Every two years the world as a whole focuses its collective glare on one location, waring nations temporarily lay down their weapons and citizens, again, wear their national pride on their sleeves as the greatest athletes in the world represent their respective countries and partake in the Olympic Games. It's a tradition spanning as far back as ancient Greece, and one that looks to continue for centuries to come. And, though photographers obviously weren't able to chronicle most of the past games (for reason of cameras not existing), this immense photo collection has picked up the slack in providing tremendous images spanning some six decades of both winter and summer Olympiad action.
From events occurring as early as the 1932 games all the way to the 1980s, just some of the sports featured in this 1,000-plus photo collection include: Skating (both figure and speed), boxing, bobsledding, skiing, weightlifting, gymnastics, swimming and diving, wrestling, and various track and field events (discus, shot put, pole vaulting, long jump, sprinting, etc.), and many more. Both men's and women's events are well-represented in this offering. Additionally, photos showing medal presentations, behind-the-scenes preparation, collegiate and amateur competition, and candid at-home shots of the athletes also find their way into this sizable collection of vintage photography.
Just a few of the nations represented include: USA, Canada, Australia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, England, USSR, China, Kenya, Netherlands and both East and West Germany.
