They say that with every decision you make, no matter how seemingly inconsequential, your life has the potential to change dramatically. It's always fun to play the hypothetical what if game. What if I had gone to school here instead of there? What if I had married so and so instead of whatshername? What if I placed one more bid to win that most treasured memento which has since appreciated in value and out of my price range? How different would it all be?
And the same can be asked for the man the world would come to know as Babe Ruth. How would George Herman Ruth's life had been different if his mother had turned a blind eye to his youthful neighborhood carousing? What if she hadn't sent him to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys in an effort to instill discipline and structure in the young boy? What if he hadn't met Brother Matthias who shaped his skills and love of the game from a young age? How different would it all have been?
Offered here is a link, which while likely not direct given the number of St. Mary's present throughout the country, to that very pivotal moment. That link comes in the form of a full size, 29" blue felt pennant with "St. Marys" sewn to its surface in white felt lettering. Some soiling present, most visibly to the white lettering, though pennant remains in excellent overall condition for a relic approaching 100 years of existence. (G0420)
