Because carrying around golf clubs wasn't a feasible option, golf salesmen had to devise a strategy to bring clubs around in a sensible way.
And the answer was this.
Offered is a 13 3/4" wood driver which mirrors what the real thing looked like. The wooden head has "The Spalding" underscored. Gold medal is fastened with five screws. The grooves are still visible. There is tape on the handle. One vintage golf source believes this was a turn of the century prototype. No chipping is evident on this creation although the handle has a black substance.
The collecting of small scale saleman's samples is a daunting task as they are so scarce and produced in numbers so much smaller than the full scale items they represented that very few pieces in any genre ever appear on the market. To date, we have only ever seen one salesman sample catchers mask and have never seen shin guards or chest protectors. This is the first wooden handled golf sample that we have ever seen. Simply a museum piece worthy of any golf or sample sports collection or for the advanced Spalding collector. Jeff, have you ever seen one of these?
Since these type items were never made for commercial sale, most were probably discarded when a newer model appeared.
