U.S. Naval Commander Henry Honeychurch Gorringe lived a life of accomplishment. An author, USS Gettysburg Captain and namesake to the Gorringe Sea Bank (which he discovered), the commander is best known for completing the daunting task of removing "Cleopatra's Needle" and devising a way to transport it to New York City's Central Park in 1881.

To mark the relocation of the Egyptian monument - his greatest accomplishment - Commander Gorringe has signed this 1881 invitation, issued in accordance with the stateside placement of the Alexandrian Obelisk. The invitation includes a photograph of the needle on one side, and the formal invitation (and Gorridge's pen-written signature) on the other.

Save for slight discoloration, this item remains in impeccable standing. NM condition. JSA auction letter included. A1525
