While toiling in the minor leagues with the Birmingham Barons, Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield designed these with a Michael Jordan basketball comeback in mind.
With a ballistic mesh upper, the sneakers was designed with a much lighter and durable build. Carbon fiber spring plate gave the shoe better torque when turning on the court.
This model was designed by Tinker Hatfield. When the shoe launched, Michael Jordan (retired from basketball by then) was trying in minor baseball leagues. Hatfield designed the sneaker waiting for Jordan to comeback and hoping he would play in them. The highlight and arguably most well-known aspect of the shoe is the patent leather mudguard. Patent leather was lightweight, when compared to genuine leather, and also tended not to stretch as much - a property to help keep the foot within the bounds of the shoe bed during direction changes on the court. The patent leather gave the XI a "formal" look. When this shoe released, some wore this model with business suits instead of dress shoes.
Tagged as in the interior of each shoe features a size 13.5 manufacturer's tag with production codes "950112 FTPS" and "130245 101 00". Size 13.5 is verified as correct by comparison to the following examples:
1995-96 Jordan, size 13.5 (Heritage)
1995-96 Jordan, size 13.5 (AMI)
1995-96 Jordan, size 13.5 (MEARS database)
Therefore size 13.5 is correct for 1995-96 Jordan shoes. The size, 13.5, is also exclusive to Michael Jordan and was not available as a retail size.
