This lot of 50 pictures captures images from the 1984 World Series between the Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres. The Tigers would go on to win the series 4 games to 1 bringing home their first World Series title since 1968.
The Tigers tore through the AL in 1984 scoring more runs than any other team while also allowing the least en route to a 104-58 record. Leading the way on offense were Lance Parrish and Kirk Gibson who both hit over 25 home runs and drove in over 90 runs. The pitching staff was led by reliever Willie Hernandez who won both the MVP and Cy Young for his dominant performance.
The Padres won the NL West with a 92-70 record then defeated the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS to move on to the World Series. On offense they were led by Tony Gwynn who would win the first of 8 career batting titles with a .351 batting average. The strength of the Padres pitching was their bullpen which featured Goose Gossage, Craig Lefferts and Dave Dravecky.

Designated as a Type 1 photo, this image was developed directly from the original photographers negative within approximately two years of the depicted person/event. Photographers included in the collection include Charles Conlon, George Burke, George Brace, William C. Greene, Alex P. Silverberg, and George Dorrill. Some are identified; many are not but were provided by these world class photographers. Unlike standard wire photos, these images were often hand developed by the photographer and sent to the Sporting News magazine. Therefore, the result is an actual first generation Type 1 photographers print -again, not be confused with the more commonly found wire photo image. News service photos are also included, and in those instances, are identified as such by their respective stampings. Acme Wire Photo, Associated Press, International News, and United Press have provided images to the archives. Reverse images are included for identification purposes.
