For the purpose of evaluation, MEARS inspected this 1982-83 Omar Moreno professional model game used Louisville Slugger signature model bat.
Examination of the centerbrand reveals the large 4 ½ 125 centerbrand, which was used during 1980-83. The phrase Louisville Slugger replaced Hillerich & Bradsby in the centerbrand during this label period. Located on the barrel end is the player requested R161 model number, which was factory stamped in block lettering/numbering at the Louisville Slugger factory. “Omar Moreno” facsimile signature was factory stamped on the barrel, as was the practice of all players under contract with Louisville Slugger. On the knob, in period, slightly worn black marker are the numbers 18 (dominant) and 22 (outer edge). Both numbers are verified as being worn by Omar Moreno. During Moreno’s final season with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1982 he wore uniform Number 18. After being trade to Houston, then the New York Yankees, he was issued number 22 while with the Yankees in 1983. Therefore, this bat was used by Moreno in 1982 (Pirates) & 1983 (Yankees). This bat bypassed Moreno’s trip to Houston, as he was issued number 24 while there.
The bat measures 35” and currently weighs 33.58 ounces. This R161 model was manufactured by Louisville Slugger with a medium knob, thinly tapered handle, and large barrel with round end. The bat is made from professional grade ash that has been flame burned at the factory. The handle contains a 10-½ inch area of athletic tape, which has been applied in thin, even, criss crossed strips. A light coating of pinetar is applied to the tape. On the reverse of the barrel are two distinct black ball marks, consistent with official National League baseballs. Although absent of ball marks, the bat still maintains heavy game use. The lack of ball marks might be attributed to Moreno cleaning the bats surface after use. On the area below the barrel stampings are 18 layers of grain, which are pounded and have loosened. This phenomenon is called deadwood. To the left of LOUISVILLE SLUGGER barrel stamp is one distinct black ball mark. Cleat marks appear on the very end of the barrel. Judging by their careful placement and the cleaned bat surface, Moreno was particular about his equipment. The factory stampings of the centerbrand, powerized, and player signature are all deep and free of blemishes.
