Very few Hall of Fame caliber skippers are ready for the big leagues without a little minor league seasoning. Such was the case of Tony LaRussa. Following a little bit of time in the minors, LaRussa was named skipper of the White Sox midway through 1979 by then owner Bill Veeck.

Dated Sept. 10, 1979 is this letter from Patti McFarland, an ardent Appleton Foxes fan, seeking response about her beloved pale hose. This letter, signed by Hall of Famer Veeck, includes the following response about the job young LaRussa was doing during his initial season. The regular compacting folds are present.

"Like you, we feel Tony LaRussa is doing a fine job and the players are responding to him. We were particularly delighted by the fine showing of Richard Dotson made Sunday at Oakland. It augers well for 1980."

Veeck signed the bottom in bold black felt tip.
