If you are building a World Class 1970s knit jersey collection, George Brett is certainly one of the must have staple players. Examples are quite rare. To date, MEARS has only examined two George Brett uniforms from the 1970s, both 1977 road examples. (Other example a MEARS A10). No other authentic 1970s George Brett jerseys have ever been examined by MEARS Auctions. Thus, this ties for the earliest known George Brett jersey known to the hobby. The Royals adopted the knit road jerseys for the 1973 season after switching from button up flannels and wore these until 1982, replacing them with a full button front version the following year.

1977 found George Brett starting to emerge into a Super Star and future HOFer. Fans recognized his emergence as he was voted to the All Star Squad for a second straight year. His offensive prowess continued, and he batted .312 and tallied 176 hits in an injury shortened season, 139 games.

Presented is a 1977 George Brett Kansas City Royals Game Worn Road Jersey. Wilson was verified as the correct supplier by comparison to the following Royals examples:

1977 Road Gura

1977 Road Hiller

The style of the Wilson tag (per Dave Grob tagging database) is the 1974-78 style which is sans the vertical red line and the register symbol is found above the “N” in Wilson. Therefore, this jersey has both the correct tag and supplier.

Size 42

Other examples of size 42 George Brett jerseys used for comparison include:

1976 Road Size 42

1980 Road Size 42

1984 Home Size 42

Therefore, this example is consistent with respect to size of other examples that have entered the hobby.

The jersey has been signed on the front, “George Brett”. JSA Auction letter included for the autograph.

Game Wear: Jersey exhibits heavy game wear with puckering to the numbering, underneath patch, and tagging. Body shell shows even, consistent wear. Staining in the form of pine tar is found on the front near the team lettering.

Final Grade (MEARS A9.5) Consideration was given to manufacture, player size, tagging, and overall game wear, 10 base points were assigned. ½ point was subtracted for staining on front. (54H0012)
