For the purpose of evaluation, MEARS inspected this 1974/75 & 1978-79 Merv Rettenmund H&B Louisville Slugger professional model game used bat. Although not a household name, Merv Rettenmund was a member of the 1975 Big Red Machine. Team collectors know that Rose, Morgan, and Bench game used bats can often be found, but an obscure team member such as Merv Rettenmund is the key to completing the 1975 World Series roster. As of this date, this is the only example known to bat expert Dave Bushing or examined by MEARS. Stats reveal:

Examination of the centerbrand reveals the 1973-75 logo. On the barrel end in squiggled red ink is Rettenmund’s uniform number 26, his number worn while playing with the Big Red Machine. Therefore, the centerbrand dating of 1973-75 coupled with his documented uniform number of 26 dates this bat.

In addition to using this bat in Cincinnati, Rettenmund carried this bat with him to the California Angels during the 1979 season. Similar to Frosty the Snowman’s magic hat, this bat might have also been charmed as Rettenmund appeared in the 1979 ALCS while playing for the Angels. We cannot say this bat was used in any post season events, but we can say it was carried by Rettenmund during the timeframe of both teams playoff seasons. The fact is documented by the faint but clearly visible uniform #8 Rettenmund's number with the Angels), which was scribbled on the bats barrel end, near the area of his Reds uniform number. This is another example of a one-player, two-team bat.

Located on the knob was the player requested R43 model. Hank Aaron made this model famous. "Merv Rettenmund" facsimile signature was factory stamped on the barrel at the Louisville Slugger factory.

The bat measures 34 1/4" and weighs 32.58 ounces. This R43 model was manufactured by Hillerich & Bradsby with a regular knob, tapered handle, and round barrel. The bat is made from professional grade ash. Use is very light, with slight surface marks and black rack marks. The factory stampings of the centerbrand, powerized, and player signature are all deep and free of blemishes.
