In Washington, he was unquestionably the center of the offense, leading the team in homers and RBI in each of his seven seasons there. Howard donned #33 for the start of the 1969 season when Ted Williams got hired and took his number 9. In 1969 he had career highs with 48 homers. In 1970 he led the AL both in HR (44) and RBI (126).

Comments: This hat is of the last style worn in Washington (1968-71). A dated 1971 hat in this auction was made by Wilson. Nobody wore number 33 in 1968 so we are labeling this hat a 1969-70 and even if Washington used two makers in 1971, Howard still wore number 33 with them in 1971 as well. Part of the second three is torn but you can plainly make out that the only possible second number had to be a three as top of loop is not closed as would be found on a number 9 and there is no other possible number. There was something written in pen on mfg. tag that has been scratched out.
