1961 Mickey Mantle New York Yankees & Willie Mays San Francisco Giants "Boston Herald Collection Archives" Original 8 1/2" x 7" Photo (Boston Herald Archives Hologram/MEARS Photo LOA)

Taken during the historic home run chase of 1961 is this classic 8 1/2" x 7" original photo of Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Willie Mays. How is that for star power? The following appear on reverse: names written, United Press International Photo stamp, "Jul 26, 1961" date stamp and Boston Herald Archives hologram.

The original Boston Herald was founded in 1846 by a group of Boston printers jointly under the name of John A. French & Company. The paper was published as a single two-sided sheet, selling for one cent. This is an original photo, in many cases a Type 1 printed at the time of the event. File copies or type 2 photos are also found, and can be distinguished by the markings on the reverse.
