Dick Allen was a slugger in the truest sense. The man who wielded a 44 ounce bat during his career was capable of hitting a moon shot, or striking out seven straight times (which he once did).

No matter what, the cigarette toting Allen was a man like few others. Yes, he had run-ins with players, fans and the media, but the powerized 5' 11" and 190 pound slugger finished with 351 lifetime round trippers.

This size "7 3/8" helmet was donned by Allen during his first go-around with the Phillies. The fiberglass shell shows tremendous use and was repainted several times. A crack on the right side probably ended the headgear's use.

A painted-on "P" is proudly displayed on the front. The inside has an ABC size tag (somewhat undecipherable) "15" written on the inner crown cushion, "7 3/8" painted in green and "Allen" administered to a swatch of white athletic tape. The tape and marker writing has worn evenly and is consistent with legitimate game wear. Batting helmet resided in a long time Philadelphia area collection before being consigned to the MEARS December auction.
