This lot of 19 photos features images from the 1960 World Series pitting the Pittsburgh Pirates against the New York Yankees. The Pirates would win the series in 7 games on Bill Mazeroski's legendary walk off home run.
The Pirates finished the season 95-59 to win the NL pennant by 7 games. On the offensive side they scored a lead leaguing 734 runs led by strong seasons from Roberto Clemente, Dick Stuart and Dick Groat, who would win the MVP trophy. Their pitching was equally strong finishing 3rd in the league in ERA led by Cy Young award winner Vern Law, Bob Friend and Elroy Face.
The 1960 Yankees would be making their 11th World Series appearance in the previous 14 years. They scored more runs and allowed fewer than any team in the American League behind excellent performances from Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Bill Skowron, Yogi Berra, Art Ditmar and Whitey Ford. Despite outscoring Pittsburgh 55-27 in the 7 game series and getting 2 complete game shutouts from Whitey Ford the Yankees weren't able to bring home the title.

Designated as a Type 1 photo, this image was developed directly from the original photographers negative within approximately two years of the depicted person/event. Photographers included in the collection include Charles Conlon, George Burke, George Brace, William C. Greene, Alex P. Silverberg, and George Dorrill. Some are identified; many are not but were provided by these world class photographers. Unlike standard wire photos, these images were often hand developed by the photographer and sent to the Sporting News magazine. Therefore, the result is an actual first generation Type 1 photographers print -again, not be confused with the more commonly found wire photo image. Acme Wire Photo, Associated Press, International News, and United Press have provided images to the archives. Reverse images are included for identification purposes.
