The phrase in baseball parlance is journeyman. In his 9 year career, Jim MacDonald pitched for more than half the teams in the American League, finally finishing up with the Chicago White Sox in 1958. Jim certainly went out in style based on this 1957 Chicago White Sox home jersey. Long sought after by uniform collectors, this jersey speaks to warm afternoons in Cominskey Park and today remains preserved in the form of vintage Hartland statues of Nellie Fox and Luis Aparicio.
The jersey is all original and the lettering and numbering is done in a heavy canvas like cotton twill fabric. Overall condition of the garment is well above average condition, with the lone exception being that the leading edges of the letter “S” on massive 9 ½” “SOX” logo on the left breast is separated from the flannel fabric. It almost looks like someone had started to remove the SOX logo for minor league use, then had a change of heart. When you consider just how gorgeous and attractive this style of uniform is, it would not have been a difficult decision to make.
The inside collar area of the jersey is soiled and there is some light spot soiling on the back, well below the red over black #36. None of this detracts from the display appeal of the garment in any appreciable manner.
We are not sure where this journeyman’s jersey has been, but the journey should end this month as you snag this classic style for your collection.
