The 1951 "Subway Series" between the New York Yankees and New York Giants is captuerd in this lot of 22 photos. The Yankees would win in 6 games to bring home their third consecutive title. It would be the last World Series for Joe DiMaggio and the first for Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays.
The Yankees finished the year 98-56 winning the AL pennant by 5 games over Cleveland. They scored the second most runs in the league that year behind league MVP Yogi Berra and Rookie of the Year Gil McDougald. Their pitching staff was headed by Vic Raschi, Eddie Lopat and Allie Reynolds and finished 3rd in the league with a 3.56 ERA.
The Giants ended the regular season in a tie for the NL pennant with the Brooklyn Dodgers. They would go to the World Series after defeating the Dodgers in a 3 game playoff culminating in Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard Round The World". The Giants scored the 2nd most runs in the league led by Thomson, Monte Irvin and a young rookie named Willie Mays. On the pitching side the Giants would lead the league with a 3.48 ERA receiving strong contributions from Sal Maglie, Larry Jansen and Jim Hearn.

Designated as a Type 1 photo, this image was developed directly from the original photographers negative within approximately two years of the depicted person/event. Photographers included in the collection include Charles Conlon, George Burke, George Brace, William C. Greene, Alex P. Silverberg, and George Dorrill. Some are identified; many are not but were provided by these world class photographers. Unlike standard wire photos, these images were often hand developed by the photographer and sent to the Sporting News magazine. Therefore, the result is an actual first generation Type 1 photographers print -again, not be confused with the more commonly found wire photo image.
