This lot of 24 photos features images from the 1948 World Series between the Cleveland Indians and Boston Braves. The Indians would win the series in 6 games bringing the World Series Championship back to Clevland for the first time since 1920.
Cleveland almost didn't make it to the series as they were tied with the Boston Red Sox for the AL pennant, but won in a playoff to eliminate the possibility of an all Boston World Series. The Cleveland team featured AL MVP Lou Boudreau as well as All Stars Joe Gordon, Ken Keltner, Bob Feller and Bob Lemon. Satchel Paige was also a 41 year old rookie on the Indians and would become the first African American to take the mound during a World Series game.
Boston won the NL pennant with a 91-62 record in 1948. The Braves led the league in ERA with a 3.38 mark with Johnny Sain turning in the most impressive performance of their hurlers posting a 24-15 record and 2.60 ERA in over 314 innings of work on the season.

Designated as a Type 1 photo, this image was developed directly from the original photographers negative within approximately two years of the depicted person/event. Photographers included in the collection include Charles Conlon, George Burke, George Brace, William C. Greene, Alex P. Silverberg, and George Dorrill. Some are identified; many are not but were provided by these world class photographers. Unlike standard wire photos, these images were often hand developed by the photographer and sent to the Sporting News magazine. Therefore, the result is an actual first generation Type 1 photographers print -again, not be confused with the more commonly found wire photo image. News service photos are also included, and in those instances, are identified as such by their respective stampings. Acme Wire Photo, Associated Press, International News, and United Press have provided images to the archives. Reverse images are included for identification purposes. As part of the production process for the newspaper, images may show production notes, photographer's stamps, date codes, and other markings associated with the production of the Sporting News newspaper. In all cases, each selected image is of superior quality, subject matter, clarity, contrast and condition.
