Can you imagine Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez fighting side by side, not to take down the Boston Red Sox but instead rebel forces in the hills of Pakistan? Neither can I. Superstars of years past didn't always have the luxury of avoiding military service. Some of the stars pictured in their other uniforms in this lot of 22 photos include Hank Greenberg, Joe Louis, Ted Williams, Bob Feller, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays and Joe Cronin. Measurements range from 6" x 6.5" to 8" x 10". Photos contain various handwritten notations, affixed cutlines and date & photographer's stamps on their reverse. Boston Herald Archives Holograms. (M0667)

The original Boston Herald was founded in 1846 by a group of Boston printers jointly under the name of John A. French & Company. The paper was published as a single two-sided sheet, selling for one cent. This is an original photo, in many cases a Type 1 printed at the time of the event. File copies or type 2 photos are also found, and can be distinguished by the markings on the reverse.
