Robert Shawkey has a footnote in Yankee history as he was the first man to start a game at Yankee Stadium.
Four times in his 15-year career Shawkey notched 20 or more wins. Presented for bidder consideration is a Yankees payroll check issued to Shawkey Sept. 27, 1930 for the sum of $200. It was Shawkey's only year serving as skipper before being replaced by Joe McCarthy in '31.
Two fold marks transverse the surface. What makes this a keeper is the check is also signed by Hall of Fame executive Ed Barrow and owner Jacob Ruppert. An ink smudge is found below the Ruppert penning.
Shawkey's signature comes in the line of fire with bank stampings although the last name is nearly perfect.
