There is one common theme on all of these photos (ranging from 7 1/2" x 10" to 6 3/4" x 8 1/2") - baseball bats. Each photo shows a superstar player with a bat in tow. Included are:
Rogers Hornsby and Jimmy O'Keefe, Pirates group of five during spring training, Harmon Killebrew with a bundle of bats, Pee Weese Reese at the Louisville Slugger Company, Joe DiMaggio with a few bats and equipment (moderate cracking/creasing), Joe Diamggio during 1949 spring training (moderate wear on front) and George Sisler holding a bat. Each has one of the following on back: date stamp, photographer stamp or production notes. Each has a Boston Herald Archives hologram on back.
The original Boston Herald was founded in 1846 by a group of Boston printers jointly under the name of John A. French & Company. The paper was published as a single two-sided sheet, selling for one cent. This is an original photo, in many cases a Type 1 printed at the time of the event. File copies or type 2 photos are also found, and can be distinguished by the markings on the reverse.
