Lou Gehrig will forever be one of the sport's signature stars. It was Gehrig who showed up for work every day and played Hall of Fame baseball.
This orb was signed by Gehrig, a number of his teammates and members of the 1935 Chicago Cubs. There is a Babe Ruth penning, but JSA has rendered the signature to be "clubhouse". What makes the ball a keeper is the autograph of Hall of Fame umpire Bill McGowan. Because he died in 1954, McGowan signed baseballs are at a severe premium.
The Chicago Cubs in the 1930s fielded some of baseball's best. In 1932 and '35 the Cubs were World Series worthy. Although they lost both times (Yankees 1932 Called Shot Series/'35 vs. Tigers) they were among the most accomplished National League squads of this period.
In 1935, Ruth was finishing up his iconic career and appeared in 28 games with the Boston Braves. When the Fall Classic came rolling around, Ruth was there for promotion. Lou Gehrig and Connie Mack were also at the the year ending event.
This OAL (Harridge) ball is signed by Gehrig, Earle Combs, Connie Mack and several members of the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs were participants in the World Series. Our guess is the ball was signed at a function promoting baseball's big showcase.
