Offered is a letter from the New York Evening Journal signed by Chris "Red" Cagle. The letter was typed to Ernest Sprandell in Kendallville, Indiana and reads Dear Ernest: I am very glad to send this autograph to you as requested, with my best wishes. It is always mighty pleasing to me to hear from my young friends throughout the country. Wishing you good luck. Sincerely, "Red" Cagle. Also on the bottom of the letter is a black and white picture of Cagle preparing to throw a football. Cagle, a halfback/quarterback was a college football star for Louisiana-Layfayette from 1922-26 and for the Army 1926-29, where he was a three-time All-American. He later played professional football for the New York Giants from 1930-32 and was a player/owner for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1933-34. Cagle died at the age of 37 in an accident around the Christmas holiday in 1942. (G0238)
