Offered for sale is a very rare circa 1928-30 Chuck Klein Louisville Slugger game used bat. Examination of the factory records reveals that during this centerbrand labeling period (1928-30), Klein ordered 35" bats. His factory records also confirm he requested bats that weighed 34 to 40 ounces. This bat measures 35" and currently weighs 30 ounces. At its present weight, the bat is 4 ounces lighter than factory records, but weight loss of 4 ounces is documented to have occurred, and this bat was most likely consistent with the lighter weights requested by Klein.

Bat exhibits heavy game use, evident throughout the length of the bat. Light signs of deadwood can be found above and below the barrel stampings. There is a heavy 3" area on the back of the barrel with separated deadwood, with a 1/2 tip of a section of grain missing. The area near the knob of the handle has some darkening, and the outline of 2 ringlets of missing handle tape is still evident.

Final Grade: MEARS A7. Base grade of 5 points for bat matching factory records with respect to weight and model, 3 points for heavy game use, minus 1 point for excessive deadwood with missing grain tip and darkened handle. Collection of MEARS staff.
