From October 1984 through October 1985, the masterpieces of Charles Martin Conlon (1905-1942) baseball photography were selected for The National Portrait Gallery’s "Baseball Americana" collection and were the feature exhibit at The Smithsonian. This marked the first time the public was allowed to view Conlon’s artistry and attendance records for the exhibit were set which led to gained National recognition for Conlon overnight. The result in Conlon gaining overnight fame was trading card sets, books, postcards, and prints. The following images were developed in the early 1980s from Conlon's original glass negatives. These images were selected to hang in the offices of The Sporting News during the nationwide promotion of The Charles Conlon Collection. With the advance of digital technology, The Sporting News replaced these prints with much larger, digital prints that currently hang on their walls. These prints are silver gel fiber based prints and were dark room developed to the highest standards. Considering the ultra-high value and rarity of original Conlon photography, this gives the buyer a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a high quality Conlon print for a reasonable price. While technically Type II prints, these darkroom-developed prints from the original glass plates are a much more desired version than today’s modern digital copies. A Sporting News Hologram is affixed to the reverse ensuring these were a part of The Sporting News permanent photo collection.
