This lot of over 750 photos captures the history of one of MLB's most storied franchises, the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs joined the National League in their inaugural season on 1876 and would go on to win the NL pennant in 6 of the league's first 11 seasons before winning back to back World Series titles in 1907 and 1908. Despite making 7 trips to the Fall Classic since 1908, most recently in 1945, the Cubs have not managed another series victory in the 102 years since 1908.

This lot truly spans Cubs history with photos of such old time ballplayers as Clark Griffith, Rogers Hornsby, Jimmie Foxx, Hack Wilson, Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Orval Overall, Burleigh Grimes, Hippo Vaughn and Roger Breshnahan to more modern Cubbies such as Ferguson Jenkins, Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Andre Dawson, Rick Sutcliffe, Goose Gossage, Bruce Sutter, Lee Smith, Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams, Leon "Bull" Durham and Shawon Dunston and hundreds more who have played in front of the ivy at Wrigley Field. Many of the photographs are glossy, recently developed modern color photos (a rarity) that measure 8" x 10" in size. (A0479)

These images originated directly from the archives of either "The Sporting News" or "SPORT Magazine" and were intended for use in the respective publication. Photographers included in the collection include Charles Conlon, George Burke, George Brace, William C. Greene, Alex P. Silverberg, and George Dorrill. Some are identified; many are not but were provided by these world class photographers.

News service photos are also included, and in those instances, are identified as such by their respective stampings. Acme Wire Photo, Associated Press, International News, and United Press have provided images to the archives. Reverse images are included for identification purposes. As part of the production process for the newspaper, images may show production notes, photographer's stamps, date codes, and other markings associated with the production of the Sporting News newspaper. In all cases, each selected image is of superior quality, subject matter, clarity, contrast and condition. Each image was archived by the particular magazine (either "The Sporting News" or "SPORT Magazine") and, despite not including an official Sporting News or SPORT Magazine hologram, is assured its origin and provenance. Additional MEARS LOA included with each lot.
