Offered is a trophy awarded to Jesse Owens after his stunning achievement of winning four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Officially known as the Games of the XI Olympiad, the Berlin Games are best remembered for Adolf Hitler’s failed attempt to use them to prove his theories of Aryan racial superiority. Jesse Owens, the African-American long-jumper and sprinter, won four gold medals in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and long jump, making him the most popular hero of the Games and the best remembered athlete in Olympic history. This trophy measures 10.5" and is engraved, "Jesse Owens USA Faster Than Mercury Munich Olympics 1936," and presented by The Chicago Defender, a weekly newspaper founded in 1905 by Robert S. Abbott for primarily African-American readers.
