As Mr. October was prepping for the 1984, season, Reggie Jackson was about to add yet another feather to his achievement filled cap, joining the exclusive 500 HR club.

Issued as the home knit pull over style, this jersey is identical to the exact one wore on September 17th, 1984 at Anaheim Stadium when Reggie Jackson accomplished the feat and hit his #500th career homerun off Bud Black. The actual jersey remains in Reggie’s personal collection.

Supplied by Wilson, additional Jackson Angels jerseys from the era support them as the correct supplier of Angels home jerseys. Examples are:

1983 Jackson Home Wilson

1984 John Home Wilson

1984 Downing Home Wilson

1985 Jackson Home Wilson

Examination of the Wilson manufactures tag reveals the tag is all original with no alterations or tampering. The style of tag is correct for the 1978-85 era.

The jersey is tagged size 46, and is supported by an actual measurement of the jersey. The chest measures out at 24” and the torso 33 ½”, both appropriate for a size 46 jersey.

MEARS also verified size 46 was correct for Reggie Jackson. Per the work compiled by Dave Grob, Reggie Jackson’s contemporary sizing reference list Jackson at 6’, 208 pounds by Street & Smith publication for the 1984 season. Per Grob’s Jersey Size Data Base, actual examples of Reggie Jackson jerseys to appear in the hobby are found as:

1981 Home size 46

1986 Home size 46

1985 Home Size 46 (MEARS database)

Therefore, the size 46 jersey is correct for Reggie Jackson for the 1984 season.

Examination of the team name, “ANGELS”, state sleeve patch, and numbering / lettering appear all original. Examination was conducted using a magnified light source and light table.

The name font, “JACKSON” (3 ¼”), appears on reverse with double tackle twill. The font of the “A” is consistent with Getty Image 52446693. Note the flattened top of the A.

Regarding game use, the overall body shell exhibits moderate but measurable game wear. Fraying can be found on all anchor stitching and the body shell shows abrasions. Some very light spotting appears on the bottom front of the shirt.

Final Grade MEARS A9.5: 10 points were awarded for the pre 1987 grading criteria, and the jersey was consistent with all categories with respects to tagging, sizing, style, etc. ½ point was subtracted due to the light staining on the front. This is the first 1984 Reggie Jackson home jersey examined by MEARS or documented to have sold in the hobby. LOA Troy R. Kinunen / MEARS
