Spud Goldstein was far more than just the Traveling Secretary for the Cleveland Indians, he was an ambassador for the game and an agent for social change. When Larry Doby integrated the American League in 1947, Doby was not uniformly well received by his teammates. According to Lou Boudreau, the Indians’ manager at the time, he wanted to get Doby some work at first base, but Doby did not have a first baseman’s mitt. Indian team mate Eddie Robison refused to shake Doby’s hand or loan him a base mitt. Seeing this unfold, Goldstein later went up to Eddie Robinson and asked to borrow his glove, then once he had it, gave it to Doby to use. In addition, according to Goldstein’s widow, Spud initially traveled with Larry Doby’s uniforms and equipment in this (Goldstein’s) team trunk to prevent those items from being stolen or vandalized. Trunk measures 32" x 19" x 15"
