3,154 base hits, 13 All Star appearances and a leagues Most Valuable Player award, all of them in a Kansas City Royals uniform. Brett’s plaque at Cooperstown will attest to this and so much more. There is so much more to this jersey than an A10 grade as well and we think you’ll agree.
The offered jersey is tagged as and measures at a size 42. Period Street & Smith Yearbooks (1981 & 1983) lists Brett at 6’, 200 lbs.
For Brett, the MEARS data base shows these exemplars for comparative analysis:
1977 Road; Size 42
1980 Home; Size 42
1990 Home; Size 44
As such we would consider a size 42 to be an appropriate size for Brett at this point in his career.
The offered jersey is manufactured by Wilson as evident by the manufacturers tag in the rear collar. This tag is period correct for an offering from 1982. The jersey features a Raglan sleeve and is a pullover style which is also period correct for Royals home jerseys. This would be the last year of this style as the Royals went to a button down front in 1983. The rear of the jersey features the name “BRETT” sewn to the jersey with individual letters and not to a plate. This is also period correct. The naming convention of “BRETT” is also year correct. Late 1980 and 1981 offerings for George Brett can be found with the naming convention “G BRETT.” This was necessitated by Kansas City’s acquisition of Ken Brett on 11 August 1980. The year annotation of “82” chain stitched onto a knit fabric swatch in the lower left tail is also period correct and consistent with common 1982 Royals jerseys in the MEARS jersey census (Cert # 309637-Tim Ireland). The cut and font for the numeral “5” on this offered jersey is also consistent with that of the Ireland jersey (#15).
The use and wear to the jersey would be categorized as moderate. The wear and fade to the twill fabric used for all the numbering and lettering is even and all anchor stitching remains firmly in place. When viewed under UV lighting, a small area of soiling/staining can be found on the right front sleeve area. Two very small 2mm to 3mm circular stains can be found on the white band of the right sleeve band. None of these areas detract in any way from the display or appeal of the jersey.
There was no history or provenance offered with this jersey at the time of evaluation. The jersey does feature an autograph “George Brett” on the left chest just below the script “ROYALS.”
For Pre-1987 jerseys, the MEARS grading metric begins at base grade of 10 with five (5) major categories for consideration when looking to codify deductions. We found no reasons to deduct points for this offered jersey.
As such the final grade for this jersey with MEARS Cert # 310941 is A 10.
