1928 circa collection of ephemera pertaining to the Milwaukee Brewers of the class AAA league. After researching the archive, I believe the collection was owned by Chas. O Hinrichs, 480 Menlo Boulevard, Shorewood, WI. His name appears on many of the publications. I believe the local newspaper, the Milwaukee Journal, published a series of contests in conjunction with the daily issuance of the newspaper. Mr. Hinrichs actively participated in the contest, winning often, and kept his efforts in these custom scrapbooks. Each booklet is of the highest quality, and serves as a time capsule to 1920s Milwaukee baseball.

Lot 1

“Bon Voyage – Ye Brewers” Ribbon Bound book (9” x 10”) with gold embossed sailing ship cover. Printed on the first inside page is, “Charles O. Hinrichs, 486 Menlo Boulevard, Shorewood, Wisconsin”. Also on the inside is a diamond cut out intended for a baseball photo to be inserted surrounded by the text, “Milwaukee Baseball Journal Contest”. The book was intended to be issued as a premium, and then each week a Milwaukee Brewers AAA player was printed in the newspaper. Fans were to cut out the issued newsprint photo and glue to the decorative scrapbook. The following players were issued, with an accompanying page in the book to serve as display for that player. Each page that was intended for the photo to be attached was previously covered by an onion skin that had the players name and title printed in blue ink. Each page had a local advertiser’s company business printed at the top of the page. The order as follows was:

Book 1

Otto Borchert; President, Jack Lelievelt; Manager (damage to onion skin), Dave Danfort, Dennis Gearin, Frank Luce, Ossie Orwoll and Fred Schulte.

Book 2 (higher grade than previous example)

Otto Borchert; President, Jack Lelievelt; Manager (damage to onion skin), Dave Danfort, Dennis Gearin, Frank Luce, Ossie Orwoll and Fred Schulte.

Lot 2

Very rare Milwaukee regional advertising book ( 6” x 8”) titled, “My Answers to the Milwaukee Journal’s Diamond Puzzles, Chas. O. Hinrichs, 486 Menlo Boulevard” embossed on the front cover. 3 hole bound in heavy braided rope.

I believe this to be the contests winners’ actual book. This contestant was Charles Hinricks. He got all of the questions right as his 1928 Milwaukee Baseball Club Pass was included. The book contained 20 newsprint photos that were cut from the Milwaukee Journal and pasted into this book before being submitted for the prize.
