By 1956, Eddie Mathews had established himself as a premier third baseman and a crucial component to the Milwaukee Braves team. During 1956, Mathews was selected to his 5th straight All Star game, and helped lead his team to a second place finish while hitting 37 homeruns. The Braves would not have to wait any longer for post season play, as the following year, 1957, Mathews, Aaron and Spahn led the team to a World Championship.
This bat measures 36” in length and currently weighs 37 ounces. According to Eddie Mathew’s personal H&B records, he only ordered this R43 model one time during the course of 1956. The bat does exhibit light use in the form of light ball & stitch marks.
The bat was taken out of circulation and gifted to a collector during the 1956 season. The prize was then used to decorate a Milwaukee area bar, as indicated by the 4 mounting holes on reverse, one mounting hole on the front.
With light use, the bat remains in near mint condition. The “Eddie Mathews” barrel stampings are perfectly set into the amber wood grain at the end of the bat.
As a single order bat, this rare example makes for a very desirable Mathews display.
