Though Wrigley Field’s 1st Night Game was scheduled for August 8, 1988, Chicago fans flocked to Chicago’s legendary ballpark the evening prior to witness a one-time event of great significance. On August 7th, shortly before dusk, the hallowed grounds of Wrigley were illuminated for the first time, revealing four of the greatest Cubs sluggers from the past half-century. For Ernie Banks & Billy Williams, well over a decade had passed since last donning Cubs pinstripes in competition. No matter, as their uniforms fell upon older but still-capable frames, worthy of launching baseballs deep into the Wrigley bleachers. Joining these legends were two of Chicago’s brightest stars of that decade - 1984 NL MVP Ryne Sandberg & 1987 NL MVP Andre Dawson. Two teams comprised of two Cub sluggers each (a then-contemporary star matched with a Hall of Famer) engaged in an epic home run contest. The offered image was captured immediately prior to this historic event. Now, almost 25 years after Wrigley’s first baseball competition under the lights, all four of these Cub greats are enshrined in Baseball’s Hall of Fame. Measures 11" x 14". (A0104)
