As the "Straw that Stirred the Drink", the bright lights of Broadway dimmed and it was time for Reggie Jackson to move back west. He was welcomed by the Angels, but it took nearly two more decades for the Yankees to appear in the World Series. Reggie had spoiled the Big Apple.

Advanced jersey collectors know that authentic Yankees jerseys are rare, HOFers are almost nonexistent, and authentic Reggie Jackson jerseys are unheard of.

During 1981, the Yankees were outfitted by Wilson. Examination reveals the correct tag, (1979-86, MEARS tagging database/Grob). The tag is original with no signs of tampering. The style is button down (7- 4 hole, gray). The sleeves are raglan and the jersey is gray knit.

The size of the jersey is 46, and the measured size verifies the jersey matches the tagged size. 46 was also verified as being correct for Jackson during the era by comparison to the following known examples:

1980 Wilson Home, size 46

1981 Wilson Home, size 46

1982 McAuliffe Home, size 46

Therefore, size 46 is an acceptable size for Reggie Jackson jerseys during the 1981 era.

For player, year, and set identification, MEARS examined the neck swatch. The information, “Jackson (player), 81 (year issued), and 2 (jersey set), were chain stitched on a grey swatch and sewn into the neck. The stitching does not penetrate the fold, and is consistent with other documented examples.

Other examples used for comparison are:

Gamble, 81, 2 (Oscar Gamble)

Jackson, 81, 1 (Reggie Jackson)

Therefore, comparison to other known examples verified manufacture, tagging style, and neck identification.

Game Wear: Jersey exhibits heavy game wear, with even breakdown of the body shell fabric, and puckering to the numbering and lettering. Soiling is visible in the neck area. A very minor stain is found on the front, but not worthy of a point deduction.

Arm Band: On the left sleeve is evidence of the removal of a black armband. The armband was added in memory of Elston Howard that died during the 1981 season. The armband has since been removed.

Final Grade MEARS A9: The jerseys was awarded 10 base points for being consistent with supplier, sizing, lettering, numbering, and having evidence of proper game wear. 1 point was deducted for missing armband. LOA Troy R. Kinunen / MEARS
