Although undated, this pennant (23") can be dated to the 1902-07 era. The Chicago Daily News becomes first-known entity to pen "Cubs" nickname as the team's moniker. The nickname refers to the amount of young players the team has. On September 15 three of those young players Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, and Frank Chance record its first double play in 6-3 win vs. Reds. The young Cubs would go on to finish in fifth place with a 68-69 record. During the 1907 season, the team officially adopted the moniker.
The style of the jersey and pill box cap depicted in the pennant artwork was worn by the team during the 1902-04 era. During this time span, the Chicago Daily News made the first reference to the team of young Cubs. The name stuck. It is our opinion that this is one of the earliest pieces associated with the club that mentions its nickname.
The pennant remains in excellent plus condition, almost mint considering its 110+ year history. Only the slight cracking to the team lettering keeps this from being officially near mint. As of the time of this writing, this is the only known example.
