Offered for this auction is a 1922-26 Ty Cobb Louisville Slugger game used bat, used during the final seasons with the Detroit Tigers. With perfect dimensions, high quality wood, and a desirable era of issuance, this Cobb bat is a perfect fit for game used bat collectors. Cobb had many milestones during this bat’s labeling period, and although undocumented, would have been available for him to use during the following feats:
(1922) Batted .401 – final time over .400 for his career
(1922) 4X had 5 hit games
(1925) 2x had 5 homerun games
(1926) Final season as a Detroit Tiger
Bat was manufactured from seasoned high grade professional ash. The grain is straight, and suitable to Cobb’s high standards.
Weight (38 ounces): Currently weighing 38 ounces, bat is consistent with Cobb’s personal H&B factory records, which record him ordering bats from 38-41 ounces. This bat is consistent with those orders.
Length (34"): Measuring 34” in length, this bat is consistent with side written examples, and another example examined by MEARS (#309434, 34”). This bat is consistent with documented 34” examples.
Model C28: The image of Cobb using the flared knob bat is famous, and this bat was manufactured to the C28 specifications.
Game Use: Bat exhibits heavy signs of use with stitch marks, light cleat marks and a small area of dead wood on the front of the barrel. Handle remains uncracked.
Final Grade (MEARS A7.5) Bat receives 5 points for matching known player factory records, 3 points for heavy game use and loses 1/2 point for a light Cobb stamp on the barrel.
