Dating (1980-85): Per the MEARS database, Tiernan was the supplier for Los Angeles Lakers from 1975-85. Jerseys from the era were not issued with year tags, so the style of the numbering is important to date the jerseys.

For the years 1975-79, the font on Lakers home jerseys was white with purple outlines. During the 1980-81 seasons, the Lakers switched to purple numbering with white outlines. This style of numbering supplied by Tiernan was used from 1980-85. In 1986, the Lakers switched to Sand Knit supplied jerseys, and the year tag, 86 was included on the jersey.

Manufacturer (Tiernan): Tiernan was the supplier of Los Angeles Lakers jerseys from 1979-85.

The style of the Tiernan tag is consistent with examples found in the Official MEARS Tagging Database (1975-85). Other examples of 1979-85 Los Angeles Lakers jerseys in the hobby to support Tiernan as the supplier include:

1982-83 Steve Mix Lakers (Home)

1982-83 Norm Nixon Lakers (Home)

1982-85 Magic Johnson (Home)

1984-85 circa Magic Johnson (Road)

1984-85 circa Magic Johnson (Home)

1984 circa Jabbar Trunks (Home)

1980-195 Abdul Jabbar (Home)

Style: Jersey is a full mesh yellow body shell with rounded tail. Sleeve and neck openings consist of white/purple/white ribbing. “LAKERS” is purple on white double tackle twill. Both the front/reverse #33 and “JABBAR” on reverse is purple on white double tackle twill. Jersey is absent of the NBA should logo which was introduced in 1986.

Font: The font for 1980-1985 Lakers shirts were produced with a angle cut into the white of the numbering which allowed the yellow mesh to show through on the majority of the shirts. A limited number of examples have been documented by MEARS not have that angle cut into the white tackle twill of the numbers also, and we note the version of the numbering for reference. This version was found with the angle cut.

Size (approximate 42): Although not notated by a size tag, the 20” chest measurement with 31” torso would make this a size 42-44 jersey, which is appropriate for Jabbar shirts during the era.

Wear: Jersey shows moderate / solid game wear. There is mounting/glue residue in the area of the upper shoulder from being displayed in a frame. .

Final Grade (MEARS A10): When examining and comparing the jersey to the 5 categories of evaluation per the MEARS Official Worksheet, MEARS determined that there was zero points deducted. (19U0374)
