Jack Katz (born 1927) is an American comic book artist and writer, painter and art teacher known for his graphic novel The First Kingdom, a 24-issue epic he began during the era of underground comix. Influenced by such illustrative comic-strip artists as Hal Foster and Alex Raymond, Katz attended the School of Industrial Art in New York City. He began working for comic-book publishers in the 1940s, during the period fans and historians call the Golden Age of Comic Books.
The story of Bulletman recounts how Jim Barr, the son of a police officer who was killed in the line of duty and as a result took it upon himself to fight crime. He was rejected from the police academy for physical reasons, but got a job in ballistics. Like many characters of the time, he used chemistry to develop powers for himself, in his case greater muscle mass and brain power using his "crime cure." He also invented a bullet-shaped Gravity Regulator Helmet which allowed him to fly and deflect bullets. His first case involved capturing a gangster in his hideout. Bulletman and Bulletgirl were Fawcett Comics' second-most-popular characters after Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family.
During 2017, Jack Katz was contracted by the MEARS Pop Culture Museum to create this original depiction of a 1940s style Bulletman. Standing triumphantly with hands on hip, Bulletman is seen wearing his traditional costume which consistis of over the calf boots, wrist gauntlets, and specially designed Bulletman levitation helmet. The very talented Joe Rubinstein provided the inking and coloring.
During May of 2017, the professional staff of MEARS arranged for a private signing with Jack Katz at his California home. Mr. Katz signed this full color 11x17 gloss archival stock paper print in near mint blue sharpie marker. Each print has been authenticated by the professional staff of JSA autograph authenticators and their official company hologram and matching certificate of authenticity card accompanying this piece. Their unique hologram number is maintained at the JSA website which validates the items authenticity.
