For this lot, we are offering an investment grade jersey from one of the games most beloved figures.

Construction: Jersey is supplied by the Goodman company and manufactured from their knit product. The fabric was compared to the 1986 Kerfeld in the MEARS museum and showed consistencies with respect to material, neck ribbing, sleeve pattern, lettering, and numbering. The jersey has set in sleeves with a “V” neck collar. Goodman was confirmed as the proper supplier of 1986 Astros jersey when compared to:

1986 Kerfeld

1986 Berra

1986 Glen Davis

Therefore, Goodman is the correct supplier of 1986 Astros jerseys.

Size 44: Review of the actual jersey also confirms that the tagged size matches actual size. The chest measurement (22”) and torso measurement (31”) are correct for a Goodman tagged size 44 product.

On the outer tail on the Goodman & Sons manufacturers tag is the size 44 indicator. Per comparison to Ryan jersey that has entered the hobby from the same relative time span, size 44 is correct for Ryan. Examples used for comparison include:

1981 Road (size 44)

1982 Alternate (size 44) MEARS #313245

1986 Home (size 44)

1988 Home (size 44)

The jersey was also compared side by side with a 1986 “Kerfeld” Astros jersey (Grob/MEARS Museum Collection) which was tagged size 48. By comparison, this jersey was 4 inches smaller.

Patch: Jersey has an original 1986 All Star Game patch on the left sleeve. The patch compares favorably to the examined “Kerfeld” jersey (MEARS Museum Collection).

Jersey exhibits moderate wear in the form of some compressions to the fabric, some wear to the lettering and numbers, and light fraying to the anchor stitching.

Provenance: A letter dated March 14, 2013, signed by Jerry Sage stated the following:

“I was fortunate to have established a very good contact within the Houston Astros Clubhouse for many years. During this time, I was able to obtain several game used items including the ones listed below.

Nolan Ryan pieces: 1986 Rainbow jersey with the All Star Patch – Hat – L/S bat model 110. (Note: hat & bat was not included during this evaluation)

Final Grade MEARS A10: Review of the 5 categories of inspection per the MEARS grading criteria worksheet revealed there were no reasons for point deductions. Autographed on the front star.
